It was the moment the fashion set has been waiting for: the debut Haute Couture collection from Raf Simons, the man officially appointed to the role of head designer at Christian Dior a mere three months ago. It may have only been a short time since we learnt of Simon’s new role, but it was a long time coming for Dior after John Galliano was removed from the role fifteen months ago. While there was no doubt that caretaker designer Bill Gaytten guided the house seamlessly during his time at the helm, it was time for the house of Dior to revisit the forward-thinking designs that were made famous by Christian Dior himself and the New Look.
It seems the doubters have now been silenced. Simons presented a flawless collection that consisted of quintessential Dior motifs: sharp tailoring, chic silhouettes, and a classic palette consisting of navy, royal blue, pastels, pinks and splashes of vibrant reds. Simons stated that he wanted the collection to pay homage to the original designs of Dior, but with a modern aesthetic and interpretation of how the New Look might translate in to 2012 fashion. Lanvin designer Alber Elbaz showered the collection with praise, telling The Guardian that it was ‘absolutely poetic … perfection. Today was a beautiful marriage between a designer and a house.’ And with the sophisticated and minimalist designs channelling classic Dior, we can’t help but swoon and say that we agree.
