It was all about the dramatics at Gail Sorronda‘s Mercedes Benz Fashion Week Australia today in Sydney, with the designer showcasing designs in her signature black and white, before diving in to a world of colour. Staged in the Box at MBFWA, this was not your usual fashion show. Sorranda stepped away from the usual parade showing, preferring a unique installation showcase instead, where the models stood on blocks to show off the designs, rotating to a dramatic film backdrop, which gave us a more intimate view of the collection.
Starting out with a pop of colour, it was all about bold greens, reds, yellows and pinks, with cheeky spots and stripes sneaking their way in to the patterns. Perhaps the most outrageously fun look of the coloured component of the collection was a quirky, loose-fitting dress that was a bold emerald green hue around the shoulders, before falling to a black torso design with bold coloured spots, before finishing with a bubblegum pink bottom. Not straying too far from Sorronda’s much loved black, the dress with plain at the back, leaving the detailing of the front to really take centre stage. Let’s not forget the head pieces- it was all feathers, flowers and clever hanging arrangements, and the unique take on the pieces really completed the looks.
Next up were the black and white designs, which were really the pinnacle of the understated elegance of the show. Floor length trousers, baby doll style tops and dresses, peplum tops (this seasons hottest cut, of course!) and fitted dresses were on show in bold blacks and creamy whites. The standout look here was a white dress that fell just above the knee, and consisted of subtle cutout detailing just below the bust. The look was completed perfectly with a bold black neck piece, with the overall effect of the look essentially personifying the fundamental feel of the music and film backdrop: dramatic, sexy, and a whole lot of fun.
