Producing a collection with almost half of it designed for men (although I don’t think I can quite see my boyfriend wearing jewel encrusted leggings) John Paul Gaultier’s Autmn/Winter 2011 Haute Couture collection provided a colourful and flamboyant change to the week of shows in Paris.
Gaultier’s Haute Couture collection was rather feather heavy, perhaps to tie in with the release of Gaultier’s new fragrance Kokorico (cock-a-doodle-do in french), but also the collection seemed to be inspired by the movie Black Swan. In particular, his signature pin-stripe suit was matched with a tutu and the bodice of a bustier dress, swathed in multi-coloured ostrich feathers, seemed like a more colourful version of one of the costumes in the film.
The rest of collection stayed true to what we love chez Gaultier, clothes that pack a punch. Doc-martin style boots, military jackets and some very wearable pieces such as a divine camel coloured coat and crystal embellished knitwear. There were also some stunning gowns, in particular a grey chiffon dress with embroidery on the bodice and pleats in the skirt which flowed to floor. The show ended in with famous French singer Mylene Farmer in an all-black ensemble of a cropped leather jacket and net mini-dress, complete with train and feather head piece. In true theatrical style, Gaultier leapt onto the stage to present Mylene with a bouquet and then dashed off to attend a party for the launch of his new fragrance. Proving that after 30 years in the business he is still unstoppable.
