I recently read an article that spoke about how Australian style was defined by our beautiful weather, that it is a huge factor why many of our style choices are often baring skin. On opening night of Mercedes Benz Fashion Week Australia, Carla Zampatti showed that even with 49 years in the Australian fashion industry, she can still reinvent herself and appeal to a young and trendy audience with her Spring/Summer 2014 collection entitled Darker.
With Michelle Jank on board as Creative Director, the collection was bold and perfect for the strong skin-baring Australian woman. Plunging necklines, open backs and deep side slits were the trend de jour of the collection, each showing off a part of the female form that should be perfectly toned and tanned.
Opening with bold black gowns, Darker paid homage to the 1970s with bell bottom trousers and jumpsuits. Texture also played a huge role in the collection, with fluid silks sitting with crepe, jersey, lace and georgette. To offset the streamlined silhouette, fluffy fur vests in bold colours were teamed with gowns, as were futuristic headgear.
We loved the fresh and modern sophistication from Carla, and it’s definitely a sign of what we can expect from the week ahead.
