There are many ways to describe a Romance Was Born fashion show – theatrical, whimsical, magical and of course a psychedelic journey through the minds of their founders Anna Plunkett and Luke Sales. For their Spring/Summer 2014 at Mercedes Benz Fashion Week Australia, they took is on a magic mushroom ride which garnered a comment from a fellow attendee that it reminded them of a “trip” they had had.
Upon walking into the show space, we were greeted with set that resembled a magical magic mushroom world, doused in glitter and all things that sparkle. When soloist Paz Lenchantin started wailing into the microphone and playing her violin, we knew we were in for quite a show.
Romance Was Born took us on a magical ride into Alice’s wonderland, where luxe tshirts, pants, dresses and coats were done in vintage floral and geometric prints, embellished at the collar but generous in their fit. These pieces were off set with magical little dresses with overblown sleeves, little puffball skirts and embellished in beading, sequins and whatever else lay in the studio (or so we like to imagine). Models resembled dolls, or creatures from Wonderland as they strutted around the set, covered glitter, drawn on eyes and donning multi-coloured wigs.
Beyond the theatrics of fanciful dresses fit for creatures who live down the rabbit hole, we loved the collection full of original and thoroughly covetable prints that will delight Romance Was Born fans.
