As his show ended with a thunder of applause, it was clear that his collection and talent as a designer has landed him at the top of New York’s up and coming to watch. Though some critics weren’t his biggest fans, the Prabal Gurung Spring/Summer 2012 fashion show at New York Fashion Week showed off his new take on embellishment and detail, but instead of traditional sparkling beading, Gurung used recycled rubber sequins which gave a much more modern edge to the collection. These sequins, cut in all different shapes, were applied to nude dresses and sheer fluoro floor length gowns. Shades of violet and aqua featured predominately in the collection, in particular a purple sheer wool floor length gown, with the rubber embellishment cut to imitate feathers.
Prabal further showed off his talent as a designer using sheer panelling for effect on the edges of a number of dresses in monochrome black and white and also in purple and prints and thigh-high side splits to the side . Our pick of the show? A black and white tuxedo jacket or sheer nude embellished dress.
