The inspiration for Alexander Wang‘s SS 2012 collection was clear from the start of the show: Motor Cross and BMX. This translated into a collection with a futuristic edge, mesh cut-outs and a sporty feel. Picking up some of the key trends for spring and summer like fluro brights; Wang used mesh was used in jackets, pants and skirts to layer over eye-popping orange and vibrant purple. Layering was also cleverly used over prints and the application of BMX and Motor cross arrow symbols in orange and aqua over white dresses and jumpers gave an almost tribal feel to the collection at times.
What particularly caught attention were the drawstring dresses complete with plastic zips, that are functional (this is part of Wang’s philosophy behind his collections also) complete with multiple pockets to add to detail. They would make a perfect addition to a summer wardrobe and a change from the maxi dress.
A more matured collection, we feel like we’re growing up with Alexander Wang too. Only with not as much cool-factor.
