I was first introduced to Lush Cosmetics through their pungent stores and a love of bath bombs when I was younger (soaking my feet after a day of shopping was my idea of a perfect day when I was in my mid-teens). Since then I have become an advocate of their Ocean Salt face scrub and their Dream Cream, so I was really excited when an apron with my name embroidered on it arrived in the mail, along with an invitation to attend a master class to learn more about the brand I have been a fan of for years.
So two weeks ago I went to a fun media event held by Lush to emphasise their skincare is made from natural ingredients. Lush’s national product trainer Amy Reynolds gave us an introduction to the brand, that Lush is more than just bath bombs and soaps, instead focus on creating good skincare products that work from fresh ingredients. And then we were sent to our little mini kitchen stations – just to prove that if the Lush staff can make their face masks by hand with natural ingredients, so can we!
Our task of the day was to make our own Sacred Truth face mask from fantastic fresh ingredients like linseeds, yoghurt, honey, papaya, wheat grass and so much more. It seemed like a slightly daunting task but Amy gave us simple instructions and explained why each ingredient is used as we dutifully poured, sliced, cracked and whipped all our ingredients into our mixing bowl. For the record, honey and yoghurt are use because they are extremely softening and moisturising, helping skin retain moisture, while ingredients like gingseng, wheat germ and green tea are rich in antioxidants to help relieve the skin after a tough day outside in the elements.
Amy explained that this is exactly what they do in the Lush factories around the world – in Australia, UK, Toronto and Vancouver, Canada, Croatia and Japan – only in much bigger quantities (and there for with much bigger mixers). The whole process took about 30 minutes, and then we got to put our face masks in little tubs to take home.
Like all fresh ingredients, we have to refrigerate the Sacred Truth fresh face mask and since it doesn’t contain synthetic preservatives, it has a two week used by date. That night my friend and I put some of the mask on as we caught up over wine, just to test out my face mask-making skills.
After we washed the mask off, it felt just like we were told it would – refreshed and clean with soft skin. The formula also has anti-ageing properties and helps reduce redness in skin, so this would be a perfect mask for summer after a day out in the sun when your skin needs that moisture boost and calming effect.
