Last week the fashion blogosphere was buzzing with the news that Gareth Pugh was teaming up with MAC Cosmetics to create a cosmetics and accessory line due out in November 2011. It seems like the perfect collaboration in our eyes, bringing back memories of the Alexander McQueen and MAC collaboration a few years ago. But what doesn’t make sense is news of the Gareth Pugh for Melissa collaboration.
Known for their rubber shoes, Melissa will release two styles of shoes, the first being the ‘Ultra’ ballet flat with a small cut out at the toe and will retail at around $110. The second style called ‘Aileron’ has yet to be unveiled but a sketch of it has and it is reportedly inspired by Pugh‘s first Parisian show. Unfortunately it’s also a flat shoe.
“I was very interested into the idea of being able to offer something of an access level product with a high quality and that has a certain consistency with what I do in my own line,” says Pugh. “MELISSA is a perfect partnership for me with their creative approach and innovative way of working.”
The Gareth Pugh for Melissa ‘Ultra’ shoe features Pugh’s signature print in a variety of colours, while we’re hoping the second shoe will at least be a heel of some kind. The two piece collection will launch next year in Spring 2012.
This news comes off the back of reports that Pugh was ready to embrace the commercial side of fashion and “start making money”. He already has quite a celebrity following with his designs worn by the likes of Daphne Guiness, Lady Gaga, Rihanna and Kylie Minogue in recent years.
I’m very excited about this project with GP +Melissa, it will be the first time that we will be able to afford something under $500 from Gareth and I just LOVE the prints and colours, well done Melissa, Well done Gareth !
I think they look hideous. Designer or not, I would not wear them!
The shoes are fabulous. Can’t wait to purchase them!!!!
I LOVE Pugh, but this design leaves a lot to be desired. First he chose hte most boring Melissa style of all, then a star? Is this Hottopic? Even the triangles design from his jacket would have been better…
