Are models-turn-fashion-designers the new celebrity-turn-fashion-designers? It seems like every week another model is designing a clothing line and it all started with the queen of them all, Kate Moss. You could argue that Elle Macpherson started before her with her Elle Macpherson Intimates collection, but even she didn’t make as big of a instant splash as Moss. Since then the likes of Erin Wasson, Molly Sims, Amber Valletta have released lines and more recently Coco Rocha, Jessica Hart (for General Pants Co), Nicole Trunfio (jewellery) have announced their collections too.
Well get ready for one more model/fashion designer, man about town (or the world) Derek Blasberg tweeted that he bumped into Irina Lazareanu in Japan today and “she told me she’s here working on her own fashion line.” Interesting development as the Romanian model hasn’t been seen very often on the runway (though she did open for Anne Valerie Hash’s Haute Couture show in January) or in ad campaigns & editorial shoots. And last we heard she was still engaged to Pete Doherty, but that was in October 2007 so who knows where that relationship has gotten too.
[Update] She is reportedly designing for Japanese department store Seibu according to Modelinia.
I wonder if Kate Moss will model for Irina’s line, after all Irina modeled for Kate‘s launch collection for Topshop.
It’s a marketing fad, but I’m still looking forward to seeing it!
