Since its SASSYBELLA.com’s 7th birthday, please allow me this small indulgence as to ramble a little about myself and a little about my baby.
I’ve never made a huge fuss about my birthdays, but just last week I was contemplating where the time had gone since the day I launched SASSYBELLA.com as a personal blog way back on August 1, 2002 to now, SASSYBELLA.com the fashion blog circa 2009… I’m amazed at how far it’s come.
From the days of sitting in a lecture hall listening to former journalists talk about news and broadcast journalism as a bright eyed youngster, to me today, the sometimes cynical fashion blogger with a penchant for dark colored clothing and online shopping.
As I was telling a friend last week, before I had even purchased the domain name, I was toying with the idea of launching a completely different kind of blog. It cam down to choosing between my two “passions”, if you must call it that, in life, Fashion and Sport.
Yes, you couldn’t get two more obscure pairings in a girl who grew up in the sport-loving city that is Melbourne, Australia but now resides in the glossy town that is Sydney (who also has dreams of setting foot in New York City). But I love sport, not so much the playing it part anymore, but if I had to choose between watching a Formula 1 race, Liverpool FC play or a Grand Slam tennis final or one of the biggest runway shows live, I’d be hard pressed to choose. Just image asking Carrie Bradshaw to choose between a pair of Manolo’s or Jimmy Choo’s and that’s me.
It’s such an odd combination that I think keeps me sane.
One can’t be all fashion in this crazy world, but it was perhaps the lure of the glamorous life that turned me into a fashionista and dare I say, materialistic things. Not that blogging has really given me the opportunity to milk the freebie teat, and nor do I intend to try. I can just hear those journalism lecturers applauding as I type that, if only some of my former colleagues studied journalism and not air kissed their way into their jobs… but I digress.
Choices aside, I am pretty happy with the one I chose (and I hope you are too). SASSYBELLA.com has grown steadily and through it I have made some wonderful friends who have opened up some amazing opportunities for me. I guess this is the part I say I big hello some people who’ve been a great influence and online-friend in the past few years: FrockWriter‘s Patty Huntington, Imelda‘s Matthew Jordan, Former CatwalkQueen-er’s Gemma Cartwright and Kimberly Foster, my web developer and friend who I sometimes annoy the hell out of, just to name just a few.
Past experiences aside, there is so much more on the horizon that I would love to accomplish so please stay tuned. It may be a tough task but I would love to try and tackle the world of the big 4 fashion weeks. Just being there to experience the fashion buzz in New York, London, Milan and Paris would be amazing. And then there is my ultimate goal, I would love to make SASSYBELLA.com financially viable because unfortunately rent and an internet connection don’t pay for themselves!
And on that note… so here’s to another year of what you’ve come to expect and so much more from us at SASSYBELLA.com. Hope everyone has a cupcake or two in celebration with me!
