On the promotional trail for his latest venture, The Cavalli Club in Dubal, the Italian fashion designer known for his love of animal prints and sexy flowing designs spoke of how he became a designer to the stars, his love for Victoria Beckham and how Giorgio Armani pay very handsomely for her services.
“Being a celebrity is not only about being beautiful – I prefer the stars of the music world because they have expression; they can move well,” Cavalli told the Times. But he never chooses his celebrity ffriends. “I don’t choose my celebrity friends, they choose me. I became the designer to the stars because my dresses accentuate their personality.”
One celebrity, formally of the music world is Victoria Beckham. The former Spice Girl walked the runway in 2006 for Roberto Cavalli’s Fall 2006/07 menswear show, with the pair teaming up to design the costumes for the Spice Girls comeback tour in 2007.
So it’s no doubt that it is one celebrity friend Cavalli cherishes.
“Victoria Beckham is lovely. I’m not bothered that she works with Giorgio Armani – the difference is that she’s a friend to me, not a model. But I don’t blame her: Armani pays a lot of money,” he remarked.
One does have to go where the money is, not that the bottom line is much to him.
“I never pay attention to costs – it’s not attractive to speak about numbers. Why can’t we just focus on the beauty of an object? I don’t know anything about the financial crisis. We’ll make a recovery by everyone loving their life, each other, and being positive.”
Ah designer sound bites, Cavalli may not be as good as Karl Lagerfeld at one line zingers, but he always has an opinion.
