We all know that the United Arab Emirates has a different set of rules to the rest of the world, so while we in the fashion world are amused by Victoria Beckham stripping off in the name of charity for Marc Jacobs’ Protect the Skin Your In tshirt campaign, some people were not.
The Telegraph reports that a Raffi Nernekian was arrested in Dubai for wearing the tshirt – where Beckham’s modesty is hidden only by some carefully placed words and hands.
Nernekian reportedly got into an argument with a local man about the tshirt and jailed for “offending public decency” for a month and will be deported from the country after serving his time.
This came a new warning was issued to British travelers about the UAE’s updated codes of conduct [pdf] which states that “clothing shall not indecently expose parts of the body, be transparent, or display obscene or offensive pictures and slogans”.
Do you think the sentencing was harsh or should Nernekian have known better?
Meanwhile the likes of Miranda Kerr, Nicollette Sheridan, Sarah Michelle Gellar, Jason Donovan and Leona Lewis will be the latest in a long line of celebrities to take off their clothes as part of Jacobs’ annual cancer awareness campaign this year.
