RAFW SS08 – Tina Kalivas

Oh how I wish I were invited to the Tina Kalivas spring summer 2008 Australian Fashion Week show. But alas I was not, so instead I’m checking out the images on Getty.

I fell in love with her collections when she first hit the Australian Fashion Week runway for S/S 2003 with her sci-fi inspired collections. The clever cutting and tailoring of materials, paired with inspired colour choices blew me away. What do you expect from a designer who plied her trade at Alexander McQueen, where she was seamstress and Creative Pattern Cutter of showpieces and private orders? The last few Tina Kalivas collections didn’t have quite the za-za-zu of the first collection, but I’m happy to say the Tina Kalivas clothes I love are back.

The geometric shapes, prints and colours of her spring summer 2008 shows that she’s taken her design to a new level, but kept to her talents and original ideas. The fitted shapes would be perfect all year round.

It was also interesting to see that she brought back the ruffles she used in her Tina Kalivas for Kookai collection in 2003 (or was it 2004?). I wonder what Dita von Teese thought – she perched on the front row.
